That’s Hedy

A-List Golden Age movie starlet. Progenitor of WiFi and Bluetooth. Today’s Google Doodle honors Hedy Lamarr‘s 101st Birthday, who is known for her iconic role of Delilah in 1949, but should also be known for her invention of Frequency-hopping spread spectrum communication technology. Originally designed to prevent the Nazi’s from jamming the signals of Allied submarines, the concept is used today to greatly improve the reliability of WiFi. The biography, Hedy’s Folly: The Life and Breakthrough Inventions of Hedy Lamarr, the Most Beautiful Woman in the World, describes her dual life.

This running joke from the movie Blazing Saddles led to an out-of-court settlement.
